WESTERN BUREAU:

A local pastor has called for Jamaica to turn back to receiving instruction and guidance from God instead of relying only on human wisdom if it is to make any progress as a nation.

The Reverend Milton Davidson, pastor of the Church of God Jamaica in Pitfour, St James, made the call while delivering the keynote sermon during a thanksgiving service held yesterday to launch this year's National Heritage Week celebration.

The service took place at the New Testament Church of God on Water Lane in Montego Bay.

Davidson told the congregation that it was not built into mankind to operate without some form of external guidance, but added that one of the modern tendencies is for persons to think and make decisions without that guidance.

"Human beings will, in fact, stumble into error, into accident, into destructiveness if they do not rely upon guidance," he warned. "Human beings are not built to operate on their own."

Quoting Jeremiah 2:13, he conveyed that the results of mankind making their own choices instead of relying on God can be seen in Jamaica today, and noted that if criminals used their ingenuity for the service of good, Jamaica would be far ahead of the rest of the world.

"We're going through crisis times, economically, socially, morally," he declared. "We need help; we need God. Man doesn't have his own guidance system; he needs God."

The service was coordinated by the Committee for the Promotion of National Religious Services (CPNRS), in conjunction with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, under this year's theme 'I Believe in Jamaica ... Our People, Our Land, Our Heritage'.

The CPNRS, which also coordinates the National Workers' Week and National Independence Thanksgiving Services each year, has as part of its objectives the heightening of awareness of Jamaica's spiritual implications as it relates to the particular emphasis or theme for the year.

Olivia Grange, minister of youth, sports and culture, said in her address that as Jamaicans, the current generation is a product of a mighty heritage.

"Our legacy is of men and women who struggled for freedom and justice. Our ancestors made the ultimate sacrifice so we can be here today in the house of God and sing songs of thanksgiving," she told the congregation.

Hi everyone,

This is an excellent article to show the Jamaican people are different!

Many here in Jamaica, want the nation to "turn to God" and away from crime. But, how can such a thing be accomplished???

...does any one know?
