Basic Truth #14 – Only Those That God Approves Will Gain Eternal Life

Jesus said at John 3:16 tells us that ‘God sent his son into the world so that everyone exercising faith in him would not be destroyed but would gain everlasting life.’ As Romans 10:17 says ‘faith follows the thing hear and the thing heard is the word about the christ.’ Yes, one is required to take in accurate knowledge about God before he can put faith in Him. This is the point that Jesus was making at John 17:3, where he states: “This means everlasting life their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.” Before a person can render acceptable worship to Jehovah, he must know accurately what His will is and what His requirements are for humans. We cannot guess at this because ‘God is a spirit and those worshipping him must worship him in spirit and truth.’ (John 4:23, 24) And this we can only learn from a diligent study of God’s Word.

Those who apply themselves to a study of God’s word will benefit themselves greatly as 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 shows. We learn that God’s word is beneficial ‘for teaching, for setting things straight and for disciplining in righteousness, so that those wanting to please God will be fully competent for every good work.’ The ones who continue in these things have the hope of being among those described in Proverbs 2:21, which reads: “ For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be lift over in it.” They will reside in the earth and enjoy peace forever. (Psalms 72:7)
