Basic Truth #16 – Bible Will Be Understood Only In The Time Of The End

Daniel 12:4 gives us this insight: “But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.” (NIV) The New World Translation renders the later part of this verse this way: “Many will rove about, and true knowledge will become abundant.” According to the 5/15/64, Watchtower, under the heading “Question From Readers,” the word rendered ‘rove’ is the Hebrew word ‘shữt’ and means to ‘move about.’ They also cite Gesenius’ Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon of the Old Testament Scriptures, 1859 edition, which says that “the verb can mean, metaphorically, to run through a book, that is, to examine thoroughly, Daniel 12:4.”

The NIV Bible Commentary, Volume I, page 1404, comments on this verse this way: “The verb stem connotes an intensity that may imply eagerness in moving quickly and excitedly back and forth. Here the meaning seems to be that many of God’s people who pay heed to these prophetic sayings will eagerly seek to understand how they are presently being fulfilled or how they are going to be fulfilled in the future.” Many Bible scholars agree that this verse indicates that true understanding of Bible prophecies will occur during what is called by Daniel ‘the time of the end.’

The prophet Habakkuk at Habakkuk 2:3 reveals that the vision that he was writing about had a future fulfillment at the ‘appointed time’ and that it concerned the time of the end. It reads: “For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay.” (NRSV) The NIV Bible Commentary, page 1495, says this: “The directive to ‘write’ is given because the revelation ‘awaits’ a future fulfillment, at ‘the end;’ its impact extends beyond the present and must therefore be transmitted by means of a permanent record.” We can then expect that a full understanding of the Bible will occur in our modern times.
