Basic Truth #17 – Human death due to Adam’s Sin

Romans 5:12 very explicitly says “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men because all sinned.” (See also Romans 5:17) The one man referred to is Adam, the first man, who through disobedience to Divine Law, brought the effects of his disobedience upon all of his descendants, the entire human race. (Genesis 2:16, 17; 3:1-6) Although he was created perfect, that is, he had no innate tendencies toward wrongdoing; he committed a deliberate act of disobedience. 1Timothy 2:14 says of him: “Adam was not deceived, but the woman was thoroughly deceived and came to be in transgression.” (NWT) This act was outright rebellion against his creator and meant that he was declaring himself independent of God.

Since he no longer needed his creator to sustain his life, he was driven from the Garden of Eden to cultivate the ground outside. The Garden of Eden represented God’s domain, his kingdom; He would not allow any disobedient humans to remain under His care and protection. As there was no Tree of Life outside the Garden, Adam’s life would eventually come to an end. Genesis 3:22 says this: “Then the Lord God [Jehovah] said, behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he stretch out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life, and eat, and live forever.” (NAS) God would not allow these two humans to eat from His provision for sustaining their lives and thus live forever as rebels.

As a result, Romans 5:19 tells us that “Through the disobedience of the one man many were constituted sinners.” (NWT) ‘The wages sin pays is death’ according to Romans 6:23 and no descendant of Adam has escaped this sentence. Romans 3:23 reminds us of this as it reads: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (NWT) In spite of this gloomy outlook, Jehovah has made provisions for saving humans from this fate and this provision will be discussed in later topics.
