Basic Truth # 27 - Spiritism Must Be Shunned

Spiritism is the belief in the spirits of dead persons being capable of communication with humans. However, in Ecclesiastes 9:5, the bible tells us that is not possible. Because of this fact, we know it must be wicked spirit creatures, or the demons, who are responsible for any type of superhuman communication with humans, not dead people. Because Jehovah loves us and has our best interests in mind, he warns us to stay away from any type of spiritism, as we will see in the bible verses below. Spiritism is mentioned as one of the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:20.

Jehovah’s word is quite clear that spiritism is something detestable to Jehovah God. All forms of spiritism must be shunned by any who want to be pleasing to Jehovah. So, as these verses show, Jehovah does not approve of spiritism.

(Deuteronomy 18:9-12) 9 “When you are entered into the land that Jehovah your God is giving you, you must not learn to do according to the detestable things of those nations. 10 There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, a practicer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, 11 or one who binds others with a spell or anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead. 12 For everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah, and on account of these detestable things Jehovah your God is driving them away from before you.

Additionally, God viewed spiritism as a practice which was deserving of capital punishment in the nation of Israel.

(Leviticus 20:27) 27 “‘And as for a man or woman in whom there proves to be a mediumistic spirit or spirit of prediction, they should be put to death without fail. They should pelt them to death with stones. Their own blood is upon them.’”

Jehovah’s law has not changed. Spiritism must be shunned by those wanting to please Jehovah. It is still detestable to Jehovah, and even now, practicers of spiritism will not inherit God’s Kingdom. Their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire, the second death as the following scripture brings out.

(Revelation 21:8) 8 But as for the cowards and those without faith and those who are disgusting in their filth and murderers and fornicators and those practicing spiritism and idolaters and all the liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur. This means the second death.”
