Basic Bible Truth #29 – Interfaith Movements Not For Christians

Many people believe that since the many so-called Christian religions claim to worship the same God that there should be no reason that they cannot meet together for worship. But this is not the case. Jehovah has, throughout the Bible, warned His people, Israel, to keep away from close association with the people of the nations. The gods that these people worshipped were gods of their own making as Jeremiah 10:1-3 shows. It reads: “Hear the word that Jehovah has spoken against you people, O house of Israel. This is what Jehovah has said: ‘Do not learn the way of the nations at all, and do not be struck with terror even at the signs of the heavens, because the nations are struck with terror at them. For the customs of the peoples are just an exhalation because it is a mere tree out of the forest that one has cut down the work of the hands of the craftsman with the billhook.’”

Moses recorded this admonition explaining the dangers of close association with the people of the nations. Deuteronomy 7:2-4 reads: “And Jehovah your God will certainly abandon them to you, and you must defeat them. You should without fail devote them to destruction. You must conclude no covenant with them nor show them any favor. And you must form no marriage alliance with them. Your daughter you must not give to his son, and his daughter you must not take for your son. For he will turn your son from following me, and they will certainly serve other gods, and Jehovah’s anger will indeed blaze against you, and he will certainly annihilate you in a hurry.”

Israel failed to heed this warning and hence fell into pagan worship and so incurred Jehovah’s anger. Moses further recorded this at Deuteronomy 32:16, 17: “They began inciting him to jealousy with strange gods; with detestable things they kept offending him. They went sacrificing to demons, not to God, gods whom they had not known, new ones who recently came in, with whom your forefathers were not acquainted.” Worshipping the gods of the nations was, in reality, worshipping the demons. (1 Corinthians 10:20)

First century Christians were also warned of forming close associations with the people living around them. At 2 Corinthians 6:14-17, Paul wrote: “Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness? Further, what harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what portion does a faithful person have with an unbeliever? And what agreement does God’s temple have with idols? For we are a temple of a living God; just as God said: ‘I shall reside among them and walk among them and I shall be their God and they will be my people.’ ‘Therefore get out from among them and separate yourselves’, says Jehovah, ‘and quit touching the unclean thing and I will take you in.’” Just as with the nation of Israel, the first century Christian were to keep themselves from the worship of the demons if Jehovah was going to dwell with them and be their God.

Paul further said that some might give the appearance of being worshippers of the true God but were in fact agents of Satan. He wrote at 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 this: “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder for Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness. But their end shall be according to their work.”

Therefore those who wish to please Jehovah and gain His favor need to be very careful not to join with others in their worship as they will be found to be worshipping demons and would incur Jehovah’s wrath. Jehovah is a God who exacts exclusive devotion and He will not share His worship with anyone or anything. (Exodus 20:5; Isaiah 42:8)
