The New World Translation's Blatant Hypocrisy Exposed!

In the “All Scripture is Inspired of God,” publication, Study #8, page 328, paragraph 7, the Watchtower Society makes the following statement:

“The New World Translation makes every effort to be consistent in its renderings. For a given Hebrew or Greek word, there has been assigned one English word, and this has been used as uniformly as the idiom or context permits in giving the full English understanding. For example, the Hebrew word ne′phesh is consistently translated “soul.” The corresponding Greek word, psy·khe′, is translated “soul” in every occurrence.”

This is a blatantly false, misleading statement on the part of the New World Translation Committee.

For example, upon close examination of the New World Translation itself, we find in the Greek Scriptures, the Greek word “mysterion” (Strong’s Concordance, #3466) occurs twenty-seven times. Most translations used the English word, “mystery” to translate this Greek word.

However we notice, the New World Translation, renders this Greek word as “Sacred Secret” twenty-four times and as “mystery” three times. These three occurrences are in 2 Thessalonians 2:7 and Revelation 17:5, 7.

Here is how these three scriptures read:

(2 Thessalonians 2:7) True, the mystery [Greek: mysterion] of this lawlessness is already at work; but only till he who is right now acting as a restraint gets to be out of the way.

(Revelation 17:5) And upon her forehead was written a name, a mystery [Greek: mysterion]: “Babylon the Great, the mother of the harlots and of the disgusting things of the earth.”

(Revelation 17:7) And so the angel said to me: “Why is it you wondered? I will tell you the mystery [Greek: mysterion] of the woman and of the wild beast that is carrying her and that has the seven heads and the ten horns.

Now let’s compare these with Matthew 13:11, which reads:

(Matthew 13:11) In reply he said: “To YOU it is granted to understand the sacred secrets [Greek: mysterion] of the kingdom of the heavens, but to those people it is not granted.

Ask yourself:

Why did they not translate the Greek word “mysterion” in these three verses as “sacred secret” as they did the other twenty-four occurrences of this word if they are truly consistent in using one English word for a Greek word in every place it occurs in the Bible?

According to the Insight on the Scriptures publication, Volume II. page 836-838, this is what the term “sacred secret” involves.

“God’s sacred secret is good news and those chosen to understand the sacred secret of God are bound, not to keep it a secret, but to give it the widest possible proclamation and publication…..The sacred secret of God” must center around Christ…..This sacred secret is an administration, a government, the Messianic kingdom of God….The sacred secret includes the congregation ……It was a mystery or “sacred secret” as to whether complete, unswerving, unblemished godly devotion could be fully maintained by anyone upon whom the Devil could bring pressure……..This sacred secret is finished at the time that Jehovah begins his kingdom by means of his Messiah.”

Based on the above information, the Watchtower Society has made it impossible for their readers, to say that the Christian Congregation could in any way be associated with “Babylon the Great” or the “Man of Lawlessness.”

In teaching this point, they have deviously made their readers disassociate that possibility by using two different words to cover the Greek word “mysterion,” namely “sacred secret” and “mystery” to be used at the appropriate time.

So in doing this, they are hypocritically doing exactly what they criticize the Churches of Christendom of doing in their Bible translations, when they translate the Greek word, “parousia,” as “coming,” “arrival” or “return,” instead of the preferred word, "presence."

The Watchtower Society claims that the Greek word, “parousia,” should be consistently translated as “presence,” when all Bible scholars admit that this word can also mean “coming,” “arrival” or “return.”

The Watchtower Society may take it as impossible for anyone to believe that they, one day, could possibly be associated with the "Man of Lawlessness" or "Babylon the Great." But, with statements such as the one taken from an article in the September 15, 2010 Watchtower, I think it entirely possible the Watchtower Society/Governing Body are well on their way to becoming the “Man of Lawlessness.”

Quote taken from Page 13 paragraph 8:

"...Similarly today, a Governing Body composed of spirit-anointed Christians contributes to the unity of the worldwide congregation. The Governing Body publishes spiritually encouraging literature in many languages. This spiritual food is based on God’s Word. Thus, WHAT IS TAUGHT IS NOT FROM MEN BUT FROM JEHOVAH.—Isa. 54:13."
