Basic Truth #7 - Jesus' One Sacrifice Sufficient

As recorded in Genesis chapter 12, when Jehovah told Abram to take his family and move them to a land that he did not know because he was going give this land to his descendants, he, at that time, had no children. Once he got into the land he was not to settle down but was to go through the length and breath of the land. At the age of ninety, Jehovah told Abram the he would become the father of many nations and he changed his name to Abraham. As part of the covenant promise, Abraham was told that by means of his seed, the nations would bless themselves. (Genesis 22:18)

At the age of ninety-nine Abraham had a son named Isaac and Isaac had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Jacob became the son who proved worthy to continue the promises made to Abraham. (Romans 9:11-13) Through Jacob’s twelve sons, Jehovah began building the nation that came to known as Israel. Eventually He gave them the land that He had promised to Abraham and He gave them His laws to live by so that they would represent Him as His named people. These laws became known as the Law Covenant or the Law of Moses because he was mediator of this covenant.

As part of this Law Covenant, provisions were made for the people to gain forgiveness of their sins by means of a priesthood and animal sacrifices. (See the book of Leviticus for details of these laws.) The priest that officiated at the altar had to do so on a regular basis offering the prescribed sacrifices on behalf of the people because as Hebrews 10:3, 4 tells us, the blood of animals could not ‘take away sins.’ They would need a more permanent sacrifice as described in the article entitled “The Ransom,” and the regular offering of these sacrifices was a reminder to them of the need for a better sacrifice. This better sacrifice was that of God’s only begotten son, Jesus, who gave his life as a ransom for many. (John 3:16; 1 John 4:10)

As Hebrews 9:24 explains, Jesus entered into heaven itself to present to Jehovah the value of his own perfect human blood and since his blood satisfied the requirements for forgiveness of sins then there would be no need for another sacrifice. He would not need to offer himself yearly as this would mean that he would have to suffer many times. (Hebrews 7:26-28; Hebrews 9:25, 26)

The blood of Jesus was used to validate a new covenant that replaced the Law Covenant given to the nation of Israel. All those of Israel who became members of this covenant, that is, those who put their faith in Jesus’ shed blood, would have their sins, those committed under the first covenant, forgiven and they would have a clean conscience before Jehovah. (1 Peter 3:21; Hebrews 9:14; 1 John 1:7) Having a clean conscience then allows these persons to approach Jehovah with freeness of speech and allows them to have the confidence that whatever they asked Him for, they would receive it. (Hebrews 4:16; 1 John 3:21, 22) The blood of Jesus also provided the means by which the promises made to Abraham would be fulfilled.

(Later we will learn how Jehovah through His Great Wisdom, purposed to use the blood of Jesus in our day -- yes, to inaugurate another needed covenant in our day and time, an "indefinitely lasting covenant" in fact, for the full restoration of God's Name People, Jehovah's Witnesses, Modern Day "Israel" of our time. -- See Ezekiel 16:59-63; Jeremiah 50:4, 5; Romans 16:27)

Also, in subsequent articles we will learn how Jehovah’s Witnesses became members of this Christian Covenant in the year of 1931 when they willingly adopted and began publicly "Declaring" God's Great Name, Jehovah. However Jehovah's Witnesses, in time failed to keep the Christian Covenant, when they became guilty of spiritual fornication by becoming official NGO supporters of the United Nations Organization, from 1992 thru 2001. -- For documentation and facts on this startling occurrence see article entitled: "Were You Aware Of This?".
