Basic Truth # 15 – There is Only One Road to Life

Today there are many religions that profess to be the true religion. Yet they all teach different doctrines that they claim are supported by the Bible and they have millions of adherents who follow their creeds devoutly. Many have concluded that it is not how one worships God but that one does offer Him worship in whatever way he pleases. They claim that though there are many roads they all lead to the same place. But is that true?

At Matthew 7:13, 14, Jesus described only two roads, one that leads to destruction and one that leads to life. He said: “Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.” Judging from what these verses say, the road to destruction is one that is broad enough to allow for many differing views and ideas, and is not a difficult one to find and remain on. The fact that many are on this road proves this. But the road leading to life is difficult to find unless one is diligently searching for it. It has a narrow gate and it is cramped because the requirements for keeping on it are very difficult and one has to give constant attention to how one is walking.

Proverbs 14:12 helps us to understand that we personally are not the best judges of what is the right way to go because as it states: “There exists a way that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are the end of it afterward.” If we rely on our own judgment to determine how we should worship Jehovah, we will most likely never know. Isaiah 55:8, 9 tells us why. It says: “For the thoughts of you people are not my thoughts, nor are my ways your ways, is the utterance of Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

As the Apostle Paul stated in Ephesians 4:4,5, while encouraging the christians of his day to remain united, ‘there is one body, one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith and one baptism.’ In order to find this one hope, this one faith, we must take time to learn what is in God’s word, the Bible. It is like a road map that gives explicit instruction to the one reading it to help him find his way. Taking the time to examine God’s word will be invaluable in finding out how to please our Creator and so choose the one right road to life.
