Basic Truth #30 – Christians Keep Separate from the World

The world or the current system of things that is in existence today is under the control of Satan as has been discussed in a previous article. He controls the political, commercial, and religious elements of the world. Although Christians live in this world, they must remain neutral with regard to any controversies that may arise. They do not fight in the wars that the nations involve themselves in, or have any part in the electing of governmental officials. They do not strive to become influential in solving the world’s problems nor do they strive to become rich by this world’s standards so that the world will speak well of them.

Because of the stand they take part in not involving themselves in anything that the nations consider important or that they believe is the duty of each citizen of the particular country in which they live, the Christian will be viewed as different and will be hated. Jesus told his disciples that this would be the case. At John 15:19, he said this: “If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you.”

Christians also keep themselves from the immoral course taken by many in the world and they also shun the entertainment that encourages such a course. They are concerned with keeping their worship clean and undefiled in God’s eyes. They highly prize their relationship with Jehovah and so do not make any efforts to win the favor of the world and become enemies of God. They take to heart the admonition of the Bible writer, James, who gave this warning at James 4:4: “Adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.”

Although a Christian knows that God is going to set up a government that will rule the entire earth, they would not take any steps to undermine any existing government but are commanded to show proper respect for these ruling authorities as they exist by permission of God. (Romans 13:1, 2) They continue to wait patiently for Jehovah to end the present system and bring in a righteous system under the auspices of his chosen king and ruler. (Psalms 72)
